Tear-out and haul away

Stairs are the one place laminate does not float. Each tread gets glued down with construction adhesive and a matching stair nose is fastened at the front edge. A floating tread would shift under your foot, and that is how people slip.

We take off the old carpet, pull the tack strip and staples, and check every tread for squeaks and loose boards before we start. Squeaks get screwed down now, because they will not go away once the laminate is on.

Each tread is scribed to the wall on both sides. Old houses are never square, so a tread cut from a tape measure alone leaves gaps. Risers are cut from the same plank or a matching white riser board, depending on the look you want.

On open stairs we return the nose around the exposed end so there is no raw HDF edge showing. A standard straight staircase of 12 to 14 steps usually takes our crew a full day. Winders and landings take longer, and we tell you that up front in the estimate. We match the stair laminate to your main floor so the whole house reads as one run of whole house laminate flooring.

Laminate flooring FAQs

Questions about laminate flooring installation

Questions we hear most often about Laminate Stair Installation in Oklahoma City, OK.

Talk to our crew
What AC rating do I need?
AC3 suits most homes, including bedrooms, living rooms and halls. AC4 holds up better to pets, kids and kitchen or entry traffic. We install mostly AC3 and AC4 boards and will tell you which fits each room.
Does laminate need to acclimate before install?
Yes. We leave the boxes flat in the rooms for about 48 hours with the heat or air running at normal settings. That lets the HDF core adjust to your home's humidity so it does not grow or shrink much after install.
Can laminate go over concrete?
Yes. We check moisture first, then lay a 6-mil poly vapor barrier with taped seams, then underlayment, then the floating floor. The slab needs to be flat within about 3/16 inch over 10 feet.
Can you install laminate over my old floor?
Laminate can float over sound, flat vinyl or tile. It should not go over carpet. We look at the old floor during the estimate and tell you whether it can stay or should come out.
Why do you leave a gap at the walls?
Laminate expands and contracts with humidity. We leave a 1/4 to 3/8 inch gap at every wall and fixed object and hide it under base or quarter round. Without it, the floor peaks or buckles.
